In male pattern baldness excellent cosmetic results can be achieved by transplanting normal growing hair from the back of the scalp to the areas where you have hair loss. All hair follicles are different, for example eyebrow hair arm hair and chest hair have their own characteristic growth patterns and grow only to a certain length. The hair follicles you have lost were genetically different and programmed to die whereas the hair follicles at the back of the scalp in most patients are never lost. They can be moved to the front and will grow just as they did in the back. Prior to Neograft the only way to achieve this was called the “strip method” which involved making a large cut in the back of the head and then taking this strip of hair bearing scalp to a side table where technicians tried to “sliver” out the actual hair follicles that we are interested in transplanting. This is a tedious task and results in a lot of wastage of follicles in addition to the resulting scar and loss of sensation in the scalp where the “strip” was taken from.
